Fusing Binary Interface Defects in Topological Phases: The Vec(Z/pZ)\operatorname{Vec}(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}) case

A binary interface defect is any interface between two (not necessarily invertible) domain walls. We compute all possible binary interface defects in Kitaev's Z/pZ\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z} model and all possible fusions between them. Our methods can be applied to any Levin-Wen model. We also give physical interpretations for each of the defects in the Z/pZ\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z} model. These physical interpretations provide a new graphical calculus which can be used to compute defect fusion.Comment: 27+10 pages, 2+5 tables, comments welcom

Your Business Needs To Invest In Artificial Intelligence

    Get PDF
Artificial intelligence (AI) is defined as “machines that respond to stimulation consistent with traditional responses from humans, given the human capacity for contemplation, judgment, and intention” by Brookings Institute. According to Amazon, AI is “the field of computer science dedicated to solving cognitive problems commonly associated with human intelligence, such as learning, problem solving, and pattern recognition”. AI has the ability to transform business as there are many applications of AI technology available today that could improve the operations and financials of a business. AI has turned capabilities that previously were only thought about as futuristic into a reality which businesses can capitalize on today. The goal of this paper is to simplify the complex topic of artificial intelligence into a sales proposal to communicate value to business leaders and other decision makers to both educate and sell these individuals on AI programs for their business. In educating the audience, I will be able to create an understanding of these complex systems. Potential buyers will be guided through information that will address the four main questions which decision makers are likely to want when assessing the potential of investing in AI for their business. These questions include, what application AI has in business, what impacts these systems will have for our business, how could our business potentially be limited by AI, and what is the future of AI technology. In answering these four core questions, potential buyers will be provided the information necessary to make a purchasing decision to implement AI within their organization. From a sales perspective, a sales manager will have the necessary research and insight into how to present AI technology to decision makers in order to close these potential customers on purchasing AI technology

Prominent Biblical Themes During the Revolutionary War

Ever since humanity has gone to war with itself, both sides of the conflict often times have used respective religious texts to argue that their god or gods were on their side and against their opponents. Saint Augustine promulgated this idea further in his theory of Just War. Colonists during the American Revolution were not exempt from this tendency but participated fully in it. Because of their Calvinistic leanings, influenced by Edwards and the First Great Awakening, North American colonists frequently referenced their own Divine text, the Bible, and went to Sacred Scripture to prove to their side that America was a fulfillment of a New Israel, Great Britain as a type of Antichrist, and ultimately on the outcome of events, which was always prescribed to as being from the Providence of God

Strong interrelationship between anomalous electric-field induced lattice strain along non-polar direction and domain reorientation in pseudorhombohedral piezoelectric ceramic BiScO3-PbTiO3

The lattice strain and domain switching behaviour was investigated as a function of cyclic field and grain orientation for a pseudorhombohedral composition of the high Curie point piezoelectric system xBiScO3 - (1-x)PbTiO3 (x = 0.40) by in-situ electric field diffraction technique with high energy synchrotron x-rays. Along the field direction, the system exhibts five time large strain along 100 as compared to the 111 direction. A one-to-one correspondence between the 200 lattice strain and the 111 domain switching suggests a strong correlation between the two phenomena.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

Environments and Morphologies of Red Sequence Galaxies with Residual Star Formation in Massive Clusters

We present a photometric investigation into recent star formation in galaxy clusters at z ~ 0.1. We use spectral energy distribution templates to quantify recent star formation in large X-ray selected clusters from the LARCS survey using matched GALEX NUV photometry. These clusters all have signs of red sequence galaxy recent star formation (as indicated by blue NUV-R colour), regardless of cluster morphology and size. A trend in environment is found for these galaxies, such that they prefer to occupy low density, high cluster radius environments. The morphology of these UV bright galaxies suggests that they are in fact red spirals, which we confirm with light curves and Galaxy Zoo voting percentages as morphological proxies. These UV bright galaxies are therefore seen to be either truncated spiral galaxies, caught by ram pressure in falling into the cluster, or high mass spirals, with the photometry dominated by the older stellar population.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 11 pages, 11 figure

Fathers, mothers, members, and outsiders : analysis of social power and authority relations in the Peoples Temple and the Church Universal and Triumphant

The entire dissertation/thesis text is included in the research.pdf file; the official abstract appears in the short.pdf file (which also appears in the research.pdf); a non-technical general description, or public abstract, appears in the public.pdf file.Title from title screen of research.pdf file (viewed on September 5, 2008)Thesis (M.A.) University of Missouri-Columbia 2008.This analysis examines the social power and authority interactions of the members of the Peoples Temple and the Church Universal and Triumphant through the lenses of the powerful and dramatic events of "white night" and "shelter night" respectively. It explores the relationships of the members through the concepts of kinship terms, socialism, membership identity, and external pressures. All of these concepts were significantly related to the events of "white night and shelter night" and through this process gain a greater understanding members' worldviews. The improved understanding of these movements' worldviews becomes extremely important when interaction with those outside of the movement is necessary.Includes bibliographical reference

Evolving morphotropic phase boundary in lead-free (Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3–BaTiO3 piezoceramics

The correlation between structure and electrical properties of lead-free (1-x)(Bi(1/2)Na(1/2))TiO(3)-xBaTiO(3) (BNT-100xBT) polycrystalline piezoceramics was investigated systematically by in situ synchrotron diffraction technique, combined with electrical property characterization. It was found that the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) between a rhombohedral and a tetragonal phase evolved into a morphotropic phase region with electric field. In the unpoled material, the MPB was positioned at the transition from space group R3m to P4mm (BNT-11BT) with optimized permittivity throughout a broad single-phase R3m composition regime. Upon poling, a range of compositions from BNT-6BT to BNT-11BT became two-phase mixture, and maximum piezoelectric coefficient was observed in BNT-7BT. It was shown that optimized electrical properties are related primarily to the capacity for domain texturing and not to phase coexistence

The clinical pharmacology of intranasal l-methamphetamine.

    Get PDF
BackgroundWe studied the pharmacology of l-methamphetamine, the less abused isomer, when used as a nasal decongestant.Methods12 subjects self-administered l-methamphetamine from a nonprescription inhaler at the recommended dose (16 inhalations over 6 hours) then at 2 and 4 (32 and 64 inhalations) times this dose. In a separate session intravenous phenylephrine (200 microg) and l-methamphetamine (5 mg) were given to define alpha agonist pharmacology and bioavailability. Physiological, cardiovascular, pharmacokinetic, and subjective effects were measured.ResultsPlasma l-methamphetamine levels were often below the level of quantification so bioavailability was estimated by comparing urinary excretion of the intravenous and inhaled doses, yielding delivered dose estimates of 74.0 +/- 56.1, 124.7 +/- 106.6, and 268.1 +/- 220.5 microg for ascending exposures (mean 4.2 +/- 3.3 microg/inhalation). Physiological changes were minimal and not dose-dependent. Small decreases in stroke volume and cardiac output suggesting mild cardiodepression were seen.ConclusionInhaled l-methamphetamine delivered from a non-prescription product produced minimal effects but may be a cardiodepressant

An AI System for Coaching Novice Programmers

Rapidly giving students meaningful feedback is a key component in an effective educational experience. A common problem in modern education is scalability, as class size increases the ability of the instructor to rapidly provide meaningful feedback decreases. Our team of undergraduates are preparing Java language platform for beginning programmers. The team has done background reading and had discussions on meaningful feedback for novice programmers over the last year. As a result we are building an online Artificial Intelligence (AI) system capable of providing insightful narrative based coaching to beginning programmers. We will then evaluate the system to insure that it meets the following criteria: it generates a unique narrative response for every input, response is generated in real time, the system is deployable online
